How messy mealtimes build your baby's brain

That chaos on the highchair tray? It's a developmental workout. Between 6 and 12 months, mealtimes quietly train some of your baby's most important skills:

  • Fine motor control — progressing from a whole-fist grab to a precise pincer grip (that first pea picked up between finger and thumb is a milestone!).
  • Hand-eye coordination — steering food from tray to mouth is harder than it looks, and every miss is practice.
  • Oral motor skills — chewing, moving food around the mouth and swallowing safely all strengthen the same muscles later used for speech.
  • Independence and confidence — self-feeding is one of the first things a baby truly does for themselves.
  • Food acceptance — handling and exploring foods repeatedly builds familiarity that reduces fussiness later.

Your job isn't to keep the process tidy — it's to keep it safe and low-stress so the learning can happen. Dress them for the mess, put a catch-tray under the action, and let the workout begin.
